My paternal uncle's wife practices sorcery against me and my mother. I am afraid to go to shuyūkh (religious scholars/healers) for fear of charlatans. One shaykh recited Qur'an over me and advised me to read Sūrat al-Baqarah for seven days, but another shaykh told my mother that this Sūrah would tire me and that I have harm (or affliction) that needs to be removed. I am confused and thinking of reading Sūrat al-Baqarah daily for life to ward off jinn and devils. What should I do?

All praise is due to Allah. We reassure the questioner that everything in the universe occurs by the decree and preordainment of Allah, and no created being has any influence over it. Allah has affirmed this in many verses of the Quran. Moreover, Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has also sent down a cure for it, and He has made the Quran a healing for the believers. We advise against going to sorcerers, soothsayers, and diviners, as this weakens one's creed, and instead, to adhere to the Quran, for in it there is immense benefit and abundant good.
