Is it obligatory to make up for prayers and fasting from past years, given that they are very numerous, and that the questioner intends to fast on Mondays and Thursdays and perform the Sunnah prayers and Witr?

The questioner is urged to be steadfast, raise her children religiously, pray for them, and perform many supererogatory acts of worship. She must make up for the prayers and fasts she missed. She should estimate the number of prayers and make them up according to her ability until she is reasonably sure she has fulfilled her obligation. She should also make up for the fasting days she intentionally broke. She can make her Monday and Thursday fasts count as make-up fasts. The prevailing opinion among us is that making up is obligatory, contrary to the view of Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, who held that making up is not obligatory, and that repentance and supererogatory acts suffice. Making up prayers in their proper order is obligatory according to the majority of scholars, and it is recommended according to the Shafi'is.
