Does the intellect follow religion, or does religion follow the intellect?

The intellect follows religion because religion is the law of Allah Almighty, and He knows best what is good for people in this world and the Hereafter. Therefore, intellects must submit to His law. What is in the Sharī‘ah does not contradict what sound intellects perceive, as Shaykh al-Islām affirmed in "Darʾ Taʿāruḍ al-ʿAql wa an-Naql" (Averting the Conflict Between Reason and Revelation).
