What should a wife do if her husband does not spend on her, yet generously gives to their children, and when she asks for money, he gives her one-sixth of what he gives them, saying: "This is the share that Allah has mentioned for you"?

A husband is not obligated to spend on his wife as much as he spends on himself. Rather, his obligation is to provide for her according to what is customary, meaning enough for food, housing, and clothing. He is not required to give her an allowance beyond the obligatory maintenance, though if he volunteers to do so, it is good. If a husband gives a gift to his children, he is not obligated to give his wife the same amount, or according to her share of inheritance. However, if he does not provide her with the obligatory maintenance, she is permitted to take from his wealth what suffices her according to what is customary, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Hind: "Take what suffices you and your child according to what is customary."
