The question

What are the rulings regarding zakat on gold, and does its ruling differ if some of it is intended for personal use and some for saving? What is the ruling on gifted gold that is not worn? What is the detailed nisab (minimum taxable amount), and is gold weighed collectively or each piece separately to calculate the nisab?

The answer

Gold that is worn or prepared for wearing is not subject to zakat according to the majority of scholars, though some require it. It is more cautious to pay zakat on it. The method of its zakat is to weigh the pure gold; if it reaches 85 grams or more and a full year has passed, 2.5% of it or its monetary value is to be given. Gold of the same karat should be weighed together, while gold of different karats should be weighed separately. Unworn or saved gold is subject to zakat if it reaches the nisab and a full year has passed.
