Is a woman religiously obligated to serve her husband by cooking and cleaning, and is it true that the majority of scholars believe the husband has no right to that from her except by her own choice?

The jurists differed regarding the obligation of a wife to serve her husband. The majority (Shafi’is, Hanbalis, and some Malikis) held that it is not obligatory, while the Hanafis, the majority of Malikis, and others held that it is obligatory. Those who affirmed the obligation cited the story of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, dividing the tasks between Ali and Fatima, may Allah be pleased with them both, as well as what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to ask of his wives, and the actions of female companions like Asma bint Abi Bakr. A number of scholars preferred the view that a wife is obligated to serve her husband with what is customary, according to prevailing custom. Evidence for this includes the principle that unrestricted contracts are interpreted according to custom, and the custom of Arabs for a woman to serve her husband in the home. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen clarified that the obligatory service for a wife is determined by custom; thus, she is not obligated to do what is not customary, nor is she required to serve her husband's mother or father.
