The answer

It is permissible to combine the intention of drawing closer to Allah through fasting with the intention of losing weight, and one hopes for reward for the fasting, because worldly benefits do not invalidate the reward. There are texts that indicate the permissibility of seeking worldly benefits alongside righteous deeds. Some scholars believe that the intention of dieting or seeking medical treatment does not affect the validity of the fast, because these benefits are acquired incidentally. The important thing is that the intention of worldly benefit does not overpower the intention of drawing closer to Allah; otherwise, the reward may be lost or diminished. It is best that the primary intention be drawing closer to Allah, and worldly benefits will then be acquired incidentally.
