What is the ruling on including non-Muslims in Quranic study circles, whether as teachers or students?

One should be gentle with those who differ from the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah (definition) wal-Jama'ah, especially the common people among them, for perhaps they will follow the truth if it is made clear to them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, loved gentleness in all matters. As for the innovator, he is not to be taught. Some scholars hold that he should not sit in the gatherings of Ahl al-Sunnah, but Imam Ahmad denounced this, advocating that people should be allowed to acquire knowledge and then leave.

Those who differ from the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah are to be included in Qur'an study circles and given attention to teach them the Sunnah and correct Islamic teachings. As for teachers who differ, they are not permitted to teach in places belonging to Ahl al-Sunnah except out of necessity, and with conditions: that they are not well-known for inviting to innovation, and that they are trusted not to spread their innovation. If they are observed spreading innovation, they must be immediately dismissed.
