Is it permissible for a young widow to marry a married man whose family refuses him to divorce his first wife, and his financial situation does not allow him to have two wives, especially given her strong attachment to him and her and her family's refusal of a second marriage?

It is not permissible for the questioner to seek the divorce of the woman, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A woman should not ask for the divorce of her sister to empty her vessel." Furthermore, the relationship between her and the man is unlawful according to Islamic law, and she must repent.

If she wishes to rectify her situation and find peace, it is through obedience to Allah, for whoever fears Allah, He will provide a way out for him. The lawful remedy for what she is experiencing is for the man to propose marriage to her if he desires, and there is no harm in her being a second wife, for Allah has permitted and legislated this, and the Companions and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, acted upon it. She must be patient with the hardship of material life, for "Three are entitled to Allah's help... and a person who marries desiring chastity." If marriage to this man is not facilitated, then she must divert her heart from attachment to him.
