To what extent is the story true regarding 'Umar ibn al-Khattab's repeated encounters with Iblis, his missing prayer because Iblis informed him it was too late, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) learning of this, 'Umar striking Iblis, the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbidding 'Umar from killing him so that the Day of Judgment might occur, and the narration, "Leave the devil, O 'Umar, and let the people earn their sustenance"?

This story is one of the falsehoods and superstitions fabricated by fabricators, and the clumsiness of its words and the banality of its meaning bear witness to its falsity. It is not permissible to promote it except to demonstrate its invalidity. Muslims must verify what they narrate from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, for it has been authentically narrated from him that he said: "Whoever intentionally lies about me, let him take his seat in Hellfire." As for Satan not seeing Umar traversing a path but that Satan would traverse a path other than his, this is authentically established in the Sahih and is among his virtues. It highlights his steadfastness in religion and his seriousness in upholding the truth, such that Satan would deviate from his path.
