What is the interpretation of the noble verse: "Is he who founded his building on righteousness and fear of Allah better, or he who founded his building on the edge of a crumbling cliff so it collapsed with him"?

This verse is among those that speak about the Mosque of Dissent (Masjid al-Dirar), and it is His (Allah's) saying, the Most High: "Never stand (for prayer) there. A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy for you to stand (for prayer) in. In it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves. Is then he who laid the foundation of his building on piety to Allah and His good pleasure better, or he who laid the foundation of his building on the brink of an undetermining precipice ready to tumble down, so it tumbled down with him into the fire of Hell? And Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. The building which they built will never cease to be a cause of hypocrisy and doubt in their hearts until their hearts are cut into pieces. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise."
