What is the ruling of Islamic law concerning a husband who, in a state of anger, cursed Allah the Almighty for the third time, and who is remorseful for his action, the ruling of which he was unaware of? Is sincere repentance sufficient, or is expiation (kaffarah) obligatory, or a renewal of the marriage contract?

Whoever insults Allah Almighty, or His Messenger, or His religion, commits an act of disbelief that expels him from the faith. The Muslim ruler must execute him, by consensus, if he does not repent. Anger is not a barrier to deeming him a disbeliever, unless its intensity causes the person to lose awareness of what he is saying, thus becoming like a madman. The plea of ignorance regarding the prohibition of insult is not accepted, as it is a matter known by necessity in the religion. The one who insults should fear Allah, admit his sin, seek forgiveness from his Lord, and renew his marriage contract. The one who insults may not be executed if he demonstrates repentance and good Islam before being brought before the ruler.
