The answer

The jurists agree on the disfavorability (makrooh) for both men and women to cover their mouths (talaththum) during prayer, due to the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) prohibition against a man covering his mouth during prayer. Talaththum according to the Shafi’is is covering the mouth, while according to the Hanafis and Hanbalis it is covering both the mouth and the nose. According to the Malikis, it is covering up to the end of the lower lip. The disfavorability of talaththum is a minor one (karahah tanzihiyyah) that does not invalidate the prayer, unless the worshipper prostrates with his forehead on the garment covering his face, in which case the prayer is invalidated according to the Shafi’is. The disfavorability is removed if there is a need for talaththum, such as the presence of non- individuals.
