What is the ruling on life insurance and the ruling on those who work for its companies?

Commercial life insurance is forbidden due to the elements of gharar (excessive uncertainty), riba (usury/interest), maysir (gambling), and consuming wealth through falsehood. Working for companies that deal in it is impermissible due to the prohibition against cooperating in sin and aggression.

The wages earned from this work before you knew of its prohibition are permissible for you to benefit from, based on the verse: (So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists, he may have what has already passed, and his affair is with Allah). However, what you took after you became aware of its prohibition, you must dispose of it by spending it on charitable and righteous causes.
