What is the ruling on thinking that Allah will punish a young man or deduct from his academic grades whenever he does inappropriate things like swearing or littering?

We congratulate the enquirer on his commitment, and affirm that his fear of a sin causing him to be deprived of provision or to be punished is commendable; because sins are among the causes of calamities and the disappearance of blessings. The Quranic verses confirm that whatever calamities befall a person are due to his sins, as Allah Almighty says: "Or when a calamity struck you, and you had struck [the enemy with] one twice as great, you said, 'From where is this?' Say, 'It is from yourselves.' Indeed, Allah is over all things competent" (Aal-Imran: 165), and His saying: "And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much" (Ash-Shura: 30). This is supported by the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "Whatever sickness, punishment, or affliction befalls you in this world is due to what your hands have earned," and his saying: "Indeed, a man is deprived of provision by a sin he commits."
