How sound is the Hadith: "How long was it between Noah and Abraham? He said: Ten centuries," and is there an interpretation that resolves the contradiction between it and what some Quranic verses imply, such as the Almighty's saying: (And 'Aad and Thamud and the Dwellers of the Rass, and many generations between them) and His saying: (those after them – none knows them except Allah), in addition to its contradiction with modern science which indicates that the age of humanity reaches hundreds of thousands of years?

The aforementioned Hadith is authentic, affirmed by Al-Albani, Al-Hakim, Ibn Hajar, Al-Haythami, Ibn Hibban, and others. As for the questioner's difficulty regarding the age of the Earth and the history of Adam, modern science primarily addresses the age of planet Earth and life on it. It does not preclude that Allah created other beings before Adam. As for the time of Adam's descent to Earth, modern science does not address it, and most of its proponents do not believe in the story of Adam; rather, they believe in the theory of evolution. Therefore, it is not correct to rely on their conclusions. What the questioner mentioned about evidence concerning the ages of the prophets has not been authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; rather, that matter is for Allah alone, and none knows it but Him. Ibn Hazm, in "Al-Fasl fil-Milal wal-Nihal," clarified that Jews and Christians differ on the age of the world, while Muslims do not definitively state a known number. The statement of seven thousand years, or more or less, is a lie, and this is affirmed by the words of the meticulous imams.
