To what extent is the oneiric (dream) method of detection valid and sound, and is it permissible in Islam, and is it permissible to use it to uncover matters people conceal, and are the dreams resulting from it taken into consideration in Shar’i (Islamic legal) rulings?

Some forms of unveiling (kashf) are divinely inspired (Rahmani), representing a divine honor bestowed upon a servant without request or acquisition. Other forms can be satanic or emanating from the self. Rulings should not be based on unveiling, and it must be presented to the Qur'an and Sunnah for verification. Only prophets are infallible; as for saints and righteous individuals, their unveilings and inspirations are not infallible and must be subjected to the Qur'an and Sunnah. It is not permissible to base rulings on dream visions. Even if a person sees the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in a dream and he commands something that contradicts the Sharia, it is not permissible to follow it. Rulings are derived from the noble Sharia, not from visions or dreams.
