Is it obligatory to take dream interpretations, and is their occurrence inevitable?

No legal ruling (hukm shar'i) can be derived from dreams, for the sources of Islamic legal rulings are revelation (wahy), consensus (ijma'), and analogical deduction (qiyas). As for the interpretation of visions (ta'bir ar-ru'ya), it is permissible for someone who is knowledgeable in it, and forbidden for the ignorant; due to the statement of Imam Malik: "No one should interpret a vision except he who is proficient in it. If he sees good, he should convey it, and if he sees otherwise, he should say good or remain silent." Al-Nafrawi explained that informing [about interpretations] by someone who is not knowledgeable is a lie, supporting this with the Almighty's saying: "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge."
