What is the ruling on relying on dreams to proceed with something or to refrain from it?

What a sleeping person sees falls into three categories: a vision from Allah, fright from Satan, and self-talk, as mentioned in the prophetic hadiths. A true vision is one that aligns with reality, whereas confused dreams are either manipulation from Satan or self-talk. One should not become attached to visions or base their actions (undertaking or refraining) upon them; rather, the Sunnah has guided towards seeking guidance (Istikhara) instead. Visions require an interpreter, and the interpreter may err or be correct. Relying on them may harm the person and hinder their interests. It is not correct to rely on books of dream interpretation because a vision differs according to individuals, circumstances, and times. If someone sees a good vision and understands its interpretation, there is no harm in acting upon it if it is a guidance or a warning. However, being preoccupied with visions and basing actions upon them has no basis in Islamic law.
