What is the correct order between Iman (faith) and Islam (submission), and which comes first, Iman or Islam?

When Islam and Iman (faith) are mentioned together in a text, their meanings diverge. Islam refers to the verbal declaration and the outward actions of the limbs, such as uttering the two testimonies of faith (Shahadatayn) and performing the five pillars of Islam. Iman, on the other hand, is what goes beyond outward actions, encompassing the heart's affirmation and belief in the unseen, along with the remaining six pillars of faith, as stated in the Hadith of Gabriel.

However, if one of them is mentioned alone, it encompasses the other. Thus, the Almighty's saying: ﴿And do not die except while you are Muslims﴾ [Al 'Imran: 102] means believers, as affirmed by scholars.
