Does the Almighty’s saying: (And your Lord is never forgetful) mean that the Lord may forget? And does His saying: (But whoever turns away after that – then it is those who are the defiantly disobedient) refer to the prophets? And does His saying: (It is not [conceivable] for a prophet to take [from war booty] unlawfully, and whoever takes unlawfully will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection) refer to the prophets?

This type of question reflects ignorance of Islamic law and language, and ill manners towards the Book of Allah. It may only come from someone who seeks contention or to impugn the Book of Allah.

The Salaf (pious predecessors) used to shun such questioners or be harsh with them because they would ask about ambiguous verses (mutashabihat). Imam Al-Shatibi enumerated the blameworthy types of questions, which include:

1. Questioning about what is of no benefit in religion. 2. Questioning after having acquired sufficient knowledge. 3. Questioning without a current need. 4. Questioning about difficult and problematic issues. 5. Questioning about the reason behind a ruling when it is devotional (ta'abbudi). 6. Questioning that reaches the extent of excessive formality and delving too deep. 7. Questioning that demonstrates opposition to the Qur'an and Sunnah with personal opinion. 8. Questioning about ambiguous verses (mutashabihat). 9. Questioning about disputes that occurred among the pious predecessors (Salaf Sālih). 10. Questioning out of obstinacy, to silence others, or to seek dominance in an argument.
