Was Al-Hasan Al-Basri a Mudallis of Hadith?

Al-Hasan al-Basri was known for tadlees (concealing defects in narrations) and irsal (transmitting from someone he did not hear directly), as mentioned by Abu al-Wafa and Ibn Hajar. An-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban described him as practicing tadlees in the isnad (chain of narration). Despite being a devout scholar, it is presumed that he would only narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) what he was certain of its authenticity. Ibn Hajar ranked him in the second category of mudallisun (those who practice tadlees), and stated that the Imams accepted the tadlees of this class and included their narrations in the Sahih collections due to their scholarly eminence, and because some of them practiced tadlees infrequently or only from trustworthy narrators.
