Is what the wife did – sexual practices with her teacher during her adolescence, which she later confessed to – consideredzina, even with her complete ignorance of what zina is and its prohibition, and her innocence, or was that a sexual assault against her? And do both of them bear responsibility for this sin, or only the teacher?

What the teacher did is a grave crime that necessitates stoning to death if he had intercourse, along with the painful torment awaiting him in the Hereafter, as was clarified by the Prophet's (PBUH) vision concerning adulterers in the furnace. As for the girl, if she did not know that this was adultery, it is hoped that Allah will forgive her, because the hadd (prescribed punishment) is not applied to one who was ignorant of the prohibition, as Umar, Uthman, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) did with the Nubian woman who was ignorant of adultery and was punished with lashing and exile, not stoning. However, if she was negligent in learning or lenient in the relationship, she must seek forgiveness, repent, and conceal herself. In this story, there is a lesson for those who are lenient in mixing and forbidden relationships.
