What is your guidance to a mosque imam in Tunisia who finds himself between two groups: one that exaggerates in declaring others as innovators (mubtadi') and shunning Muslims and inciting hatred, and another that exaggerates in declaring Muslims as disbelievers (takfir)? And what is your guidance to these groups?

Muslims should fear Allah and remember the sanctity of a Muslim's blood, wealth, and honor, and that if the tongue is not restrained by the Shari'a, it will lead its owner to perdition, as happened to the man who swore that Allah would not forgive another, so Allah nullified his deeds. One must be wary of slandering Muslims with accusations of disbelief (takfir) or innovation (tabdi'), for this is not zeal for religion but rather haste and recklessness. Passing judgment with bid'ah (innovation) or takfir (disbelief) has its rules and principles among the scholars, and these serious matters should be referred to them. As for you, you should be gentle and lenient in advising them, clarifying the danger of their approach, and quoting the words of the scholars to them.
