Is it permissible to attend the funeral of one who died due to addiction?

Whoever dies upon Islam, it is prescribed to pray over them and attend their funeral. However, some scholars have held the view that it is permissible for people of righteousness and those who are emulated to refrain from attending the funerals of transgressors, as a deterrent against such behavior. As stated in the Ikhtiyarat of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, regarding one who dies and used to not give zakat and only prayed during Ramadan, it is appropriate for people of knowledge and religious devotion not to pray over him, as a punishment and deterrent for others like him. And regarding one who dies openly manifesting wickedness, while still possessing faith, such as those who commit major sins, if one refrains from praying over them as a deterrent for others from similar actions, it is good. And if one refrains outwardly while supplicating for them inwardly, combining the two benefits, it is even better.

In summary, it is necessary to pray over them and escort them [to burial] as long as they died upon Islam. And if there is a benefit for people of righteousness in refraining from attending their funerals, then they should do so.
