Is it permissible to pray for a drug dealer who has died?

If a man dies outwardly as a Muslim, then the funeral prayer should be offered for him, no matter how great his sin. If the righteous abstain from offering the prayer for him to deter others from committing similar sins, then this is good. Al-Majd and others are of the view that the funeral prayer should not be offered for someone who dies in open disobedience without repentance. However, Malik, Abu Hanifa, Al-Shafi'i, and the majority of scholars held that the funeral prayer should be offered for a transgressor, and that the Prophet's (peace be upon him) abstention from praying over the embezzler and the suicide victim was a deterrent, and that the Companions did pray over them. The consensus of scholars is to offer the funeral prayer for every Muslim, including those who received corporal punishment, those who were stoned to death, and those who committed suicide.
