What is the ruling on trading in gemstones, 70% of which are used in the making of statues and idols, and how is their zakat to be paid? And if it is unlawful, what should a Muslim do with the money earned from it?

Originally, it is permissible to extract stones, sell them, and mediate in such transactions. However, this becomes forbidden if it is known that they will be used to make idols and statues. Similarly, mediating in such cases is also forbidden, and the earned money is unlawful and must be spent on the welfare of Muslims. The prohibition is due to aiding in disbelief and sin, as Allah Almighty says: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade selling grapes to anyone who would turn them into wine. An exception to this prohibition is a state of compelling necessity, where it is permissible to work in it until a Muslim finds another job.
