Is it obligatory to make up missed prayers by performing the obligatory prayer twice for each (missed) obligatory prayer?

The preponderant view is that whoever abandons prayer entirely is an apostate disbeliever. He must renew his faith, and he is not required to make up the prayers he missed. The majority of scholars, however, hold that he is not a disbeliever despite his sinfulness. He must repent and immediately make up the prayers he neglected, according to his ability. If the missed prayers are numerous, he should make up at least two days' worth of prayers per day, unless this would hinder him from earning a livelihood for his dependents, in which case it is permissible to make up only one day's worth of prayers.
