Is the Hadith "There is no itikaf except in the Three Mosques: Al-Masjid Al-Haram, the Mosque of the Messenger, and Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa" authentic?

Al-Albani authenticated the hadith of Hudhayfah: "There is no itikaf except in the three mosques: al-Masjid al-Haram." However, the majority of scholars hold that itikaf is not restricted to the three mosques, basing their view on the words of Allah Almighty: (And do not have sexual relations with them while you are in itikaf in the mosques) [Al-Baqarah/187]. The generality of the word "mosques" includes all of them. The practice of Muslims has been to perform itikaf in the mosques of their countries. Scholars have clarified that the hadith of Hudhayfah — if authentic — negates perfection, not validity, and that the most complete itikaf is that performed in the three mosques due to their honor. A condition for the mosque where itikaf is performed is that congregational prayer must be established therein if the person performing itikaf is someone for whom it is obligatory.
