Why weren't the Hadiths of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, explicit and comprehensive for all possibilities, such as the Sunnah after Friday prayer? And why do scholars reconcile between Hadiths? Is this reconciliation based solely on personal opinions?
The texts of the Sharia are of two types: definitive (qat'i) which admit no interpretation, and probabilistic (zhanni) which are open to ijtihad (independent reasoning). Allah Almighty did not make all texts definitive for reasons including: providing an opportunity for scholars to exert their utmost effort in arriving at Allah's ruling, magnifying their rewards, and elevating their ranks; and to demonstrate the superiority of some over others through the understanding with which Allah blesses them. Furthermore, the existence of this diversity has led to disagreements among scholars, whereby the one who is correct receives two rewards and the one who errs receives one reward, and it contains leniency for the general populace. Scholars do not engage in ijtihad based on their whims; rather, they strive to follow the Sharia. They have established rules for reconciling evidence, such as interpreting an absolute statement in light of a restricted one. If reconciliation is impossible, they resort to preferring one evidence over another.
