The word "hour" (الساعة) in the Quran and Sunnah does not necessarily mean "sixty minutes"; rather, it refers to "a portion of time" whose length varies, or to "the Day of Judgment" (القيامة), or to "the present time." The hour of responsiveness on Friday is short, whereas the nocturnal hour of responsiveness is longer. The division into twelve hours in the Friday hadith means dividing the day from dawn until sunset into twelve equal parts, where each part represents an "hour" whose actual duration changes according to the length or shortness of the day, and is not fixed at sixty minutes. This is how the hours mentioned in the virtue of going early for Friday prayer are understood.
