Is it permissible to rely on God when committing a sin, and what is the ruling on relying on God during disobedience?

If the self whispers to commit a sin, one must strive against it to abandon it, and remember its prohibition and punishment. If a person relies on Allah in committing a sin and achieves what they desired, then that will rebound to their detriment. For Ibn al-Qayyim explains that reliance [tawakkul] upon Allah applies to various matters, some of which are beloved to Allah and some of which are displeasing. Whoever relies on Allah for something will attain it. If it was beloved, then the outcome is praiseworthy. If it was displeasing, then what they attained is detrimental to them. As for reliance on other than Allah, it is shirk (polytheism). So, reliance on Allah is an act of worship and an obligation, and directing it to other than Him is shirk. Therefore, a servant must stop the sin and rely on Allah to help them abandon it.
