What is the ruling on slaughtering a pregnant ewe unknowingly, and is it permissible to eat its meat?

It is permissible to slaughter a pregnant animal and to consume its fetus, unless it emerges alive and viable, in which case it must be slaughtered according to Islamic rites (tadhkiyah); otherwise, it is unlawful to eat. The proof for this is the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "The slaughter of the fetus is the slaughter of its mother."
