How should the questioner act regarding money given to her by benefactors, when she is not in need of it?
If the money paid to the sister who asked the question and her children is from zakat, then it is not permissible for her to accept it if she is wealthy, because the wealthy are not among the eight categories of zakat recipients. However, if it is from voluntary charity (sadaqat at-tatawwu') or gifts of affection, then it is permissible for her to accept it because it is considered a gift, and it is recommended for the wealthy person to abstain from it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained the virtue of sponsoring an orphan, saying: "I and the sponsor of an orphan will be in Paradise like this," and he gestured with his index and middle fingers, separating them slightly.
