Is it permissible to adopt the view of Sheikh al-Qarafi—may Allah have mercy on him—regarding the permissibility of consuming hashish and marijuana if one is convinced by his opinion or because it is a small amount, knowing that he considers it not to be impure, that there is no prescribed punishment for it, and that he permits consuming a small amount of it?

Al-Qarafi's statement regarding hashish does not imply its absolute permissibility. He stated in "Al-Furuq" that the people of his era agreed on prohibiting large quantities of it that intoxicate the mind. Al-Qarafi and others compared it to wine and found that its harms might exceed those of wine. What is obligatory is to follow the stronger opinion, not the easier one.
