What is the ruling on performing Eid prayer at home, individually and in congregation, and delivering the sermon, given the continued closure of mosques and prayer areas due to the pandemic?

Scholars differ on the ruling concerning the Eid prayer. Some say it is obligatory, some say it is a Sunnah, and some say it is a communal obligation (fard kifaya). The most preponderant view is that it is an emphasized Sunnah or a communal obligation (fard kifaya).

If it is possible to hold the Eid prayer in one prayer area (musalla), then this is preferable to achieve the establishment of this ritual. Whoever is unable to attend should perform it after the Imam's prayer concludes. He may pray it with its specific characteristics, including the extra takbirat, or omit them; however, performing the extra takbirat is preferable. The household members can pray it in congregation without a sermon.

If the Eid prayer is not held at all, then it is permissible to pray it individually or for the members of each household to pray it in congregation, because praying it in homes during this calamity is more legitimate.
