Is prayer upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) obligatory when hearing his name in the Qur’an or seeing it written, and does the same ruling apply to all other prophets?

If one hears the mention of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, whether in the Quran or elsewhere, they should invoke blessings upon him. It is also recommended to invoke blessings upon all other prophets and messengers.

Scholars have differed on whether invoking blessings upon the Prophet is obligatory or recommended. The majority opinion leans towards it being recommended, while Ibn al-Qayyim preferred the view of obligation, and Ash-Shawkani favored the majority opinion.

A reciter is not required to interrupt their recitation to invoke blessings upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, when his name is mentioned, because reciting the Quran is superior. However, it is recommended to invoke blessings upon the Prophet when seeing his name written.
