Would I have exceeded the limit and would my wife still be my wife if I told her that if she did something she would be divorced, but she did not do it?

If a man says to his wife: "If you do such and such, then you are divorced," and she does it, divorce occurs according to the majority of scholars. Some scholars, like Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, are of the view that divorce occurs if the husband intended it to occur upon the fulfillment of the condition. However, if he only intended to prevent his wife from performing the action, then this falls under the ruling of an oath, and expiation is due upon breaking it, and divorce does not occur.

Therefore, if the wife does not perform this action, nothing occurs. One should be cautious about using divorce pronouncements during arguments and anger.
