The answer

It has not been reported in the of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he would dip dates in water before eating them at . Rather, he would break his fast with fresh dates (rutab), dried dates (tamr), or sips of water. Therefore, one should not dip dates in water with the intention of it being a Sunnah act. However, there is no harm in doing so for ordinary purposes such as cleaning them or softening them.
