Is dipping dates in water before eating them at Iftar a Sunnah or not, and what is the evidence for that?

It has not been reported in the Sunnah (definition) of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he would dip dates in water before eating them at iftar (definition). Rather, he would break his fast with fresh dates (rutab), dried dates (tamr), or sips of water. Therefore, one should not dip dates in water with the intention of it being a Sunnah act. However, there is no harm in doing so for ordinary purposes such as cleaning them or softening them.
