What is the meaning of Allah's saying: (Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?), and was the last verse of Surat Al-Kafiroon abrogated, and what is the reality of abrogation and the abrogated?

The Almighty says: ﴿Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?﴾.

﴿Whatever We abrogate﴾: Whatever ruling of a verse We transfer and replace with another, such as transforming lawful into unlawful. Abrogation occurs in commands, prohibitions, interdictions, and permissions, but not in reports.

﴿Or cause it to be forgotten﴾: This can be read with a Dammah on the 'Nun' and a Kasrah on the 'Sin' (نُنسِها), meaning: We abandon it. Or it can be read with a Fathah on the 'Nun' and 'Sin' and a silent Hamza between the 'Sin' and 'Ha' (نَنْسَأها), meaning: We defer its abrogation.

﴿We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it﴾: We bring what is more beneficial for people than it, in the immediate and the distant future, or what is similar to it.

As for the last verse of Surat Al-Kafirun: ﴿For you is your religion, and for me is my religion﴾, its meaning is: If you are content with your religion, then I am content with my religion, or for you is your recompense, and for me is my recompense.
