What is the interpretation of the verse: "Whatever a verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it"? What was the reason for its revelation? What are the verses that were forgotten? Did the Messenger forget them, and how many were there? Were they written in the Qur'an and then removed? And how were they known if the Messenger had forgotten them and Allah had not replaced them?

The reason for the revelation of verse 106 of Surat al-Baqarah is the envy of the Jews towards Muslims and their slandering of Islam, claiming contradictions in the Quran. So, the verse was revealed in response to them.

The abrogated verses are excluded from Allah's saying: "We will make you recite, and you will not forget [anything], Except what Allah wills," (87:6-7). The exception refers to what Allah has abrogated from the Quran, lifting its ruling and recitation.
