Is it considered disobedience for a son to remain in the city while his father lives alone in a distant house cut off from services, due to the son's inability to bear living in that place?

The questioner must obey her father and stay with him, as leaving him alone is considered an act of disobedience (uquq), unless she is certain to be harmed by staying. Her feeling of discomfort (istiihash) with the place is not a harm that permits leaving her father. The potential hardship does not negate the obligation to obey one's parent in what is good (maruf). Ibn Taymiyyah said: "A person is obliged to obey his parents in matters that do not involve disobedience (to Allah), even if they are disobedient (fasiqun)... This applies when there is a benefit for them and no harm (to the child). If it causes hardship to him but does not harm him, then it is obligatory; otherwise, it is not." Obedience to one's father is a cause for success and prosperity in this world and the Hereafter, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The father is the middle gate of Paradise; so if you wish, you may neglect this gate or preserve it."
