If music is forbidden, how then is it used in the treatment of depression?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The four Imams and the majority of scholars have ruled that musical instruments are forbidden. A consensus (ijma') on this matter has been recounted, as they are a symbol of the dissolute and incite desires. Allah has not made healing in what He has forbidden; rather, it is a disease. The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade seeking healing through the unlawful, stating that intoxicants are a disease and not a cure. What is said about treating depression with music does not change its impermissibility, for Allah has not confined healing to what is forbidden. Listening to the Qur'an is the best cure and healing. Therefore, music is forbidden, it is a disease for the hearts, and it has detrimental effects.
