What is the ruling on music associated with purposeful and non-obscene lyrics, and what is the wisdom behind its prohibition if it is indeed prohibited?

The prohibition of musical instruments (ma'azif) is an agreed-upon matter among reputable scholars. All instruments of amusement are forbidden to listen to, with the exception of the duff (hand drum). The wisdom behind their prohibition lies in their profound effect of corrupting the heart, distracting it from its welfare, and averting it from the remembrance of Allah and prayer. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that listening to music instills hypocrisy in some, stubbornness in others, denial in some, immorality in others, and recklessness in some, and it leads to the love of images and the approval of indecencies. He indicated that it is the "Qur'an of Satan," and thus, it can never coexist with the Qur'an of the Most Merciful in one heart. He further stated that it is the foundation of hypocrisy, for the one who engages in singing is either immoral or a hypocrite, and his heart boils with desires and the love of what Allah and His Messenger dislike, such as the sounds of musical instruments and instruments of amusement. Among the signs of hypocrisy are a lack of remembrance of Allah and laziness when rising for prayer, and rarely will you find someone infatuated with singing who does not fit this description.
