Usury is one of the gravest major sins and enormities. It is impermissible to commit it except in a dire necessity, which is when a person reaches a point where they fear perishing or coming close to it if they do not consume what is forbidden. Necessity is defined as an extreme danger that threatens life, limb, honor, mind, or property. Unless the situation reaches this level, it is not permissible to borrow with usury. Thus, whoever finds housing for rent is not considered compelled to own it through usury.
