Is it permissible to marry a man who is already married and has five children, and how can one convince the family to agree to this marriage?
Marriage is a natural right and a divine tradition. Allah legislated it to be a bond based on the acceptance and consent of both parties, and their freedom of choice. If two mature individuals agree to marry, and the suitor possesses good character and religious commitment, then the family and society should assist them, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If someone whose religious commitment and character you approve comes to you [to propose marriage], then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption."
The girl should persuade her family amicably, and they are not permitted to reject a competent man. The guardian is essential for the marriage to be valid, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Any woman who marries without the permission of her guardian, her marriage is invalid." However, the guardian is not permitted to arbitrarily prevent his ward's marriage; otherwise, the guardianship transfers to the next in line or to the judge. The questioner should ask Allah for guidance and persuade her family amicably. She should also know that the suitor is a stranger to her until the marriage contract is concluded, so it is not permissible for her to be alone with him or to display her body in front of him.
