What is the ruling on water that separates from an impurity before its removal if the water has not changed due to it? And is it permissible to use it for ablution if it passed over a wound containing blood then descended onto the limbs of ablution?

Many jurists have maintained that a small quantity of water becomes impure merely by coming into contact with an impurity, even if its characteristics do not change. This is the view of the Shafi’is and Hanbalis. The Hanbalis further state that water separated from an impure area before the impurity is removed is impure.

The more preponderant view is that water, whether in small or large quantity, does not become impure merely by coming into contact with an impurity unless its characteristics are changed by it. This is the view of the Malikis. Accordingly, water that separates without change is not impure.
