The scholars answered the apparent contradiction between the verses by explaining that each verse addresses a different situation:

- "Bring us Allah's punishment": This was uttered by them first because Lot (peace be upon him) was steadfast in guidance and reminding them of the warning. So, his people's response was one of denial and mockery, suitable for the beginning of admonitions.

- "Expel Lot's family": This was uttered by them later, after much admonition and repetition, and they had grown weary of him. So, their response was one of torture and revenge.

- Some responses came from the elders of the people, and some from others, or one of the two responses was uttered when they consulted among themselves about Lot (peace be upon him).
