How can members of the Association of Moroccans Living in Barcelona calculate Zakat al-Fitr?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, obligated Zakat (definition) al-Fitr as a sa' of dates or barley. Scholars have interpreted "food" in the Hadith (definition) as the staple food of the people of a region, and rice is among the permissible staple foods for disbursement. The obligatory amount for Zakat al-Fitr is one sa' of all types [of food], which is approximately three kilograms by weight. It is obligatory upon every Muslim (young, old, male, female, free, enslaved), and it is recommended to give it on behalf of a fetus.

Zakat al-Fitr must be given out one or two days before the Eid prayer. Its earliest time is the night of the twenty-eighth of Ramadan (definition), and it is not permissible to delay it until after the Eid prayer.

The recipients of Zakat are the poor and the needy. It is a purification for the fasting person and a food for the needy. According to the majority of scholars, it is not permissible to give its value in money; rather, it must be given out in food.

The sa' was estimated at approximately three kilograms by Sheikh Ibn Baz and the Permanent Committee, while Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen estimated it at 2.1 kilograms of rice. This difference is attributed to the fact that the sa' is a measure of volume, not weight, and it is preferable to be cautious by increasing the amount.
