What is the difference between a mosque and a جامع (Jāmi’) mosque?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The difference between a mosque (masjid) and a congregational mosque (jami') is that the latter is more general. It is where the Friday prayer is performed, as indicated by the hadith: "There is no i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) except in a congregational mosque." As for a mosque that is not a congregational mosque, only the five daily prayers are performed in it.
